The naughty part of her brain was clearly fired up from the French fry grease. What else could have caused her to utter such a thing to that man?
“Sorry. What?” he asked, around his fry.
“I said, I’m thinking about sex.”
Her nonchalant attitude was about ninety percent bluff, but still, she hadn’t been prepared for him to choke on his own fry. So, she could rile the big man. Good to know.
“Are you okay?” she asked, handing him a soda can in a replay of his actions to her earlier.
Larimar took it and busied himself with taking a sip. Kimberley was a grown ass woman. She wasn’t going to pussyfoot around the whole thing. The truth was, ever since she’d laid eyes on the man, her girly bits had perked up with interest.
He didn’t seem entirely uninterested. Maybe with a little effort she could tempt him to make this babysitting gig a bit more memorable for them both. She bit her lip as she considered her options.
Sex was sex. It was a generally accepted statistic that the average adult thought about sex seven to ten times a day. Maybe even more. She refused to be embarrassed about admitting it.
Kimberley liked sex, or at least she wanted to like it.
Truth was, the men she typically dated were just not all that inclined to perform up to her standards. Which, let’s face it, were not all that high. Pickings were slim in her world.
Staring at her damn near irresistible bodyguard, she wondered if he ever had performance problems. Doubted it but wondered all the same. She was perfectly willing to own up to the fact that her miscalculated sexual experiences had been her fault. At least her exes had always assumed she was the problem. So far, she’d believed them.
Dang it, if only she had the guts to come on to a guy like Larimar. Like really come on to him. It had been so long since she’d been physically close to anyone. She hadn’t been keen in recent years to risk more rejection and humiliation, so she’d pretty much just given up on sex.
“So, um, you’re thinking about, um, sex?” he squeaked.
Adorable man.
“Yes. I’m sorry if I shocked you.”
“No, no. Uh, what, um, were you thinking exactly?”
“I was thinking the reason I am addicted to fast food is probably caused by my lack of it,” she admitted and popped another fry.
“Your lack of fast food?”
“No. my lack of sex.”
“Uhhhh, er, umm,” he stammered.
“Look, greasy goodness offers instant satisfaction that I can always depend on. I have not had the same experience with men. Pathetic, I know, but it’s true.”
“If that’s true,” he said, and his voice dropped lower, “then maybe you’ve been doing it wrong.”
Kim swallowed the fry down and tried not to react to the glittering of his crazy sexy blue-gray-green eyes from across the small table. He seemed to watch every move she made, like he was studying her or something.
It was the or something that had her body reacting and that was dangerous in and of itself, but not as dangerous as the sudden tightness in her chest, and the dampness pooling between her thighs.
“I imagine you put a lot of emphasis on your job. You seem so diligent and devoted to your work.”
“Ambitious. Although my peers generally sneer when they say that about me, or any woman really,” she replied and shrugged.
“Then those people are idiots, and you shouldn’t listen to them,” he said and held her gaze.
She dropped her eyes and reached for her napkin, freezing when his hands skimmed hers as he handed the paper to her.
“Thanks.”
She would never apologize or make excuses for why her work was important to her. Men sure didn’t. Kim had spent her entire life building towards her position as a tenured professor of archeology.
She’d always given a hundred and ten percent, striving to prove she deserved the chance to play with the big boys in the field. And hell, not only had she played with them, but she’d beaten them. Plenty of them.
Until one decided to destroy her career.
Heaviness weighed on her as she realized her entire career, all the decades of preparation and commitment, years of her life, was all for nothing. It was completely ruined now because of one jealous and unscrupulous scumbag who’d sold her down the river.
She’d love ten minutes alone with Harold just so she could tear his head off. Not that she would. Kimberley was no good at violence. Just like she was no good at sex.
Sadness threatened to overwhelm her anger until finally, she pushed both emotions right out of her mind. She would just have to find something else to do with her life. That is, if she made it out of this alive.
Kim had almost forgotten people had been shooting at her earlier that day. She swallowed and tried to stem the spinning sensation inside her mind. Her job, her life’s work, her actual life, all were hanging in the balance. She’d almost died today. She exhaled slow and long.
Kimberley was damn tired of never getting what she wanted. Maybe she should just take it. What would happen then?
“Hey, where’d you just go?” Larimar asked, and she looked up to discover he’d gotten up from his seat and was in fact kneeling at her feet, concern on his ridiculously handsome face.
“Oh well,” she said, more to herself than to him, “what have I got to lose?”
Then she was pressing her lips to his, and Larimar froze. Kim refused to give up, she just kept on kissing him, and kissing him, and kissing him until the big man groaned and wrapped his arm around her waist.
He took his other hand and cupped the back of her neck so he could move her where he wanted her. Then, Larimar was kissing her back, and it was better than she could have ever imagined.
“Mine,” he growled against her lips, pressing his tongue inside her mouth, and Kimberley opened for him.
She might not know a lot about sex, but when Larimar started kissing her back, the whole damn world fell away. It was then that Kimberley finally knew what it meant to be truly tempted into sin.
“I should warn you, if you let me have you, Kimberley, I won’t let go,” he growled against her lips.
“Then don’t,” she said, head swimming with need.
For the first time in her life, Kim felt like a goddess, and it was all because of one kiss.
Dangerous, sexy man.
