Daeja took in the four hulking men taking up space on various sides of the corridor. They were accompanied by three humans.
One, an older male, the second, a younger male in a white coat, and the third, was a female. All were engaged in a furious discussion on the far side of the hallway.
Then there was Daeja, and the other female Shifter, Jennifer, whose animal nature had feathers, she was sure of it. But it was only one of those large, hulking males caught her eye. Her inner beast purred with approval.
Heliodore was more stunning than any of the suns of her mother planet. Crystalline yellow eyes, more brilliant than gilt, studied her, while she memorized every inch of his enormous frame.
Wide shoulders, narrow waist, impressive height, too. His musculature appeared both earned and intrinsic to his very design. It made him an ideal specimen.
But it was the thick, glossy hair that fell over his forehead in a dozen shades of gold that made her fingers itch to test its softness. The hard line of his mouth that compelled her to press her lips to his. The rugged, chiseled features, and perfectly straight nose that drew her female heart sure as a mating call.
It was all Daeja could do not to stake her claim right then and there. Everything about him, from his snowy fresh scent to his godlike perfection, made her body slick with need, and her Drakein roar with desire.
On Drakeinan, females rarely got to meet males unless an arrangement had been previously brokered between the families or Clans. If that happened to occur, where a female saw a male, and if he proved to be her mate as destined by the All Powerful, the female was permitted to declare her intent. By the laws of Drakeinan, if a female came upon her fated mate, she was encouraged to bind him to her, claim him with her bite, and to carry his younglings.
All these things would benefit the Clan and were therefore permitted. But she was not on Drakeinan.
That is of no consequence. He is mine.
Daeja desired to claim this male, this Heliodore. She opened her mouth to make her intentions known, but Jennifer stepped in before she could speak.
The confounded woman was proving to be more trouble than Daeja had originally assumed. She wondered if there would be an Earth penalty for killing the meddlesome female.
Grrrr.
Ultimately, she decided not to risk it as her apakein still needed her. Besides, she supposed she could learn much from the woman about Earth ways. The first of which she wanted to know was how to claim him.
“Jennifer, I need a word,” she said, and tugged the woman to the far corner.
She did not want to leave him, but she needed to find out how to proceed.
“You have to be more careful, Daeja, or you will give yourself away—"
“Perfect. It is my intent to give myself away. To him,” she said to Jennifer, pointing at the sublime specimen.
“What?!” Jennifer shouted, before shaking her head and repeating the word at a much softer volume. “What?”
“I am prepared to give up all promised rations of the delicious Fre-nch-fr-ies so I may have this male,” Daeja whispered.
“Shh! No, you can’t just have him,” Jennifer hissed.
“Are you attached to him? I will challenge you for the right to pursue him—”
“Whoa, absolutely not,” Jennifer mumbled and shook her head. “He is not mine. He is not anyone’s! We don’t do things that way here. Besides Daeja, I doubt you mean it—”
“You question my resolve? I think you must have forgotten the All Powerful on this planet, Poor Jennifer Dylluan.”
“All Powerful?”
“Indeed, the All Powerful is the creator of all great Shifters. I know now it was their divine omnipotence that has sent me here, to Earth. He is the reason,” Daeja replied firmly.
Jennifer shook her head, but Daeja was already looking beyond the female. She saw him across the room. His glowing yellow eyes intent on her.
“You must be shitting me,” Jennifer whispered, removing her eye shields, and gripping the bridge of her nose with her thumb and forefinger.
“I shit you not, Miss Dylluan. It is him. He is mine.”
“Daeja, I swear,” Jennifer muttered.
“You should not swear—”
“If you do not stop talking now, you will never see another ration,” the female threatened, and admittedly, Daeja’s inner Drakein did not take it very well.
Daeja hissed and blurred across the corridor fast as her legs would carry her, which was rather fast actually. She stopped in front of the shocked male, Heliodore, the one she intended to take as her mate.
True, she would miss the salty treat and would crave it occasionally. But it could never replace her desire for her mate. And he was her mate. The All Powerful had surely sent her there to claim him.
If it cost her all the Fr-ench-fr-ies in the world, he would be worth it.
