Heliodore could not believe his eyes.
The little pink siren with the body of a goddess was like him, a Wyvern, but—females did not exist. Or did they?
Fucking. Hell.
Not only was the temptress something he’d never dreamed even existed, but she was a lifesaver! A pink-haired angel! She had stopped Caro’s pain. Taught his brother to sing. And was even now actively communicating with Carolina and Jasper’s unborn younglings.
They were expecting twins, apparently. Two healthy babies. Imagine that?
Jasper unashamedly wept as he cradled his wife. Dor’s brother crooned to his children in a deep bass, soothing his younglings, and easing his mate’s discomfort.
Hell, even Dor teared up. Unlike Conny, who was wiping his eyes frantically, Heliodore was man enough to admit it.
“Drakein females must carry their young for fifteen turns of the twin moons. It is because of the complexity of our dual nature and the fragility of our newborns,” Daeja explained patiently.
No one had any fucking inkling what she was on about. It didn’t matter. She could be crazy as fuck, and he still would not care.
Neither did his Wyvern. The female was his. His mate. It was that simple. And with every second that ticked by, he wanted her more.
“Who are you, really? I mean, half of what you said is completely unbelievable and the other half, I am afraid to even consider. Where do you come from?” Zircon whispered, his blue eyes blazing.
“She told you her name,” Dor interrupted, unwilling to have anyone question her.
“It is okay, revolko. Zircon, is it? I was told to tell you I am Daeja Smith. That is who I am now.”
“How do we know you can be trusted?” Conny persisted, but Heliodore had heard enough.
A primal growl reverberated from deep inside, shaking his entire body with the strength of his beast’s displeasure. It was purely animalistic. Coming straight from the Wyvern’s soul to his lips as he lightly took her hand and moved her behind him.
He ignored the shock of electricity that ripped through him at the slight contact, but not the sharp gasp escaping her lips. Her pink eyes darkened, and she shuddered, though not in revulsion.
Fuck. If anything, her scent grew sweeter and Heliodore was desperate to revel in it. But not now. First, he had to protect her. It was a biological imperative.
“What do you want, Zircon? Daeja just proved herself. She did what no one else here could do, helping Carolina and Jasper. She got her through the worst of her pain and ensured everyone that she and their babies will be fine.”
“I want to know who she is and where she came from because Jennifer sure as shit doesn’t seem okay,” he growled.
Conny gestured to where their handler was currently on her cell phone. The Great Horned Owl Shifter appeared pale and defensive as she whispered frantically into the phone.
He’d seen that expression whenever Jennifer went to battle with one of her bosses. Usually, she was defending him or one of his idiot brothers.
He felt Daeja tense behind him, and he knew something was wrong. He wished he could eavesdrop, but this was a Shifter facility, designed specifically to stop that kind of thing.
“I wish no ill will between you brothers. I have told you already, I am Drakein, like you,” Daeja said and tried to go around him.
But Heliodore would not have it. It was like his Wyvern had suddenly gone all caveman on him. The need to protect, to cherish, to take care of her was damn near sending him to his knees.
“Can’t you see this makes no sense? What is she talking about? We’re a couple of long lost princes? Come on! She’s nuts!” Conny shouted, and that was it.
Heliodore loved his brothers. He would do anything for his family. But he was damn near 100% sure this female was his. So, he did what any of them would do when someone talked shit about his female. He knocked the fucker out.
Ignoring the yelling and disappointed reprimand of his father, Kim, and Lari, who had joined them in the hallway, Heliodore turned to Daeja.
“You hit him,” she stated.
“Yeah,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck.
It was the only thing he could think of doing. Especially since every instinct he had was pretty much screaming at him to toss her sweet ass over his shoulder and carry her off to his bed.
Great idea. Let’s do that.
Alarm bells went off in his head, but he didn’t give a shit. Dor wanted her. He just needed to know one thing first.
“What do you know about Wyverns?”
The pretty pink-haired siren stopped and straightened her spine, meeting his stare head on with her now magenta eyes.
“I told you this already, revolko. Many times. Has this place made you weak-minded? Is it the air? Or the water? Heavens forbid, is it a result of eating the delicious Fre-nch-fr-ies?” Daeja asked, eyes wide.
“What?”
Dor cocked his head to the side. He didn’t know what she was on about, but fuck, she was cute. That silver outfit was damn lucky. It fit her like a second skin, and it was affecting him pretty dang obviously. Any minute now, his dick was gonna punch a hole through his pants.
“I know about Wyverns because I am one. I am Drakein, and so are you,” she told him firmly.
