Daeja’s heart pounded louder than any youngling’s trumpeting cry. Just being near the male was enough to send her into her heat cycle.
“Frek,” she cursed under her breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing.” She looked up only to be caught in his sparkling, flavescent gaze.
The more he stared, the more yellow leaked into his irises, turning his stare into one that was both feral and completely prepossessing. As if he was inviting her to test his resolve. A temptation that was, indeed, very attractive to her she-beast.
A rumbling purr began deep within her, traveling to her chest, then spilling from her lips before she could stop it. The male stepped nearer, frowning as he moved, and Daeja tensed, both fearing and desiring him to touch her.
“This way,” he murmured, using his hand to hold the door open as she slipped past him.
She tried hard not to inhale the icy fresh scent that seemed to ooze from his pores. He smelled so good.
Frek. Frek. FREK.
Good females did not feel so wantonly, at least that was what she had been told. Daeja frowned. It was not impossible she should feel this way.
She believed he was her mate, and her physical attraction only confirmed her initial supposition. But he’d been raised on Earth, and she did not know what that meant insofar as mating.
Would he see her alien nature as something to fear or loathe? Doubts consumed her, but she kept pace with his long stride until they came to his transport.
“Here we are. Climb in.”
Daeja stopped. She would not simply obey his command as she had been taught to do by the males in her Clan. This was Earth now.
Daeja had rights, or so the female, Jennifer, had assured her. Regardless of the small disagreement, she still trusted the woman knew her stuff.
“Why?”
“So we can go to the safe house,” he replied, rubbing his neck in a manner she found quite attractive.
Heliodore exhaled a breath, tapping on the door he held open. It was not his impatience she found thwarting, it was the idea of being under a male’s control.
Daeja was smart enough to know part of the downfall of her home planet was the very real misogyny that ran amok among the higher ranking Drakein males.
If both females and males made up a society, then it stood to reason both should have a say in how it was run. She wondered how Heliodore felt about that.
Would he be overbearing? Would he seek to rule her? In all her excitement at meeting her fated mate, Daeja had not considered the cons.
Maybe it was time to test the waters, as they said on Earth.
“You wish me to get into this vehicle?”
“Yes,” he said, his gritty voice sending shivers down her spine.
“You wish me to trust you?”
“Yes.”
“Why should I?” she asked, waiting for his response.
She’d heard from mated Drakein females about their possessive males and how they had even less freedom once they were claimed. Daeja was not interested in having less of anything.
Cass Viper was a monster. The time in the Drakeinan ship traveling through space had been so very difficult. The females aboard were on constant alert, never able to rest or be at ease.
“It is my job to keep you safe,” Heliodore responded.
He raised one golden eyebrow, and she almost whimpered at his physical perfection. Then, as if he knew she needed space, he stepped back from the vehicle’s open door.
“I have to be honest with you, Daeja. Making sure you are protected is not just my job. It’s something my Wyvern insists on. I won’t let anything hurt you. Plus,” he added, a sexy grin spreading across his face as he walked around to the other side of the vehicle.
“I know where the French fries are.”
Well played, Daeja thought and narrowed her eyes at him. She crossed her arms over her chest.
“I am not going to follow you for rations. Besides, I am no longer hungry.”
Of course, Daeja’s stomach betrayed her at that very moment. Heliodore chuckled. It was an appealing masculine sound, as he slid into his seat with all the ease and grace of a Drakein who knew his worth.
Daeja hissed her displeasure. Stupid female. Getting all worked up because of some sexy male and his knowledge of where to obtain her coveted Fr-ench-fr-ies.
“Get in, Daeja. I’m hungry, too,” he growled and this time his eyes heated as they coasted over her form.
Perhaps he found her attractive. That would be good. Very good. She cleared her throat and slid into the passenger seat, closing the door before facing him.
“Good,” he said, approvingly. “We’ll grab some food, then head to the safe house. We have a lot to talk about, Daeja.”
“Fine,” she growled, “But I will tell you nothing unless you procure at least four rations for my sustenance.”
“Agreed,” he nodded, then started the engine of the large, and again rectangular, vehicle.
“What is with all the planes?” she mumbled.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
