Heliodore’s Wyvern was pissed as fucking hell. Mostly at himself. But also at his father, his brothers, and a certain pink-haired siren hellbent on giving him the cold shoulder.
They’d spent two hours going over their plans to infiltrate Jennifer’s office at one of DPCA’s secret underground locations.
“So, we can just waltz in?”
Jasper snorted. Nothing was ever that fucking easy, and they both knew it. Still, they all waited in the woods behind the old glass factory, at the edge of the pine barrens, that was now a secret DPCA base.
It was him, Jasper, Larimar, and Daeja. She would not be left behind. In fact, she’d practically busted the windows with her snarl when they’d suggested it.
His badass mate was fucking sexy as hell, even if she hated him right now.
Shit. He fucked up. What else was new?
He’d been worried about his brother and Jennifer, and so wrapped up in wanting to stay buried in Daeja’s body, he never really considered how she would feel about him talking to his father and brothers about her whole claim to be from another planet.
He knew better now, of course. She felt betrayed. Of course she did. His brothers had been cruel. Untrusting, and his father single-minded. She’d been thrust into an interrogation the likes of which he should have protected her from.
Fuck. He was a total POS.
At least he was man enough to acknowledge his mistakes. Heliodore would spend the rest of his life begging for forgiveness. As soon as he proved her right or wrong about the whole other planet thing by finding or not finding this comm of hers.
Either way presented problems. If she was an alien, that meant they all were. The realization hit him like a blast of cold air.
“Now!” Jasper signaled, and he and Heliodore moved as one.
“I want to go,” Daeja said, but Larimar shook his head.
“We wait here. They will find the comm unit—if it exists,” Lari muttered.
Heliodore moved. Too far then to hear anything else. He followed Jasper to the main entrance, and they snuck up on the sole guard. Taking him out without injuring the man was easy enough. All part of their training, thanks to the DPCA.
Ironic? Maybe.
Either way, this was a priority. He needed to make amends to his mate, find his brother, and his handler. Hopefully, the other DPCA Agents wouldn’t be too pissed about this. But he supposed that all depended.
If there was a government cover up about the existence of aliens, why should he be surprised?
They’d successfully hidden the existence of Shifters and other supernaturals from the public for centuries.
Hell, he’d met Shifters, not like him, but others who could turn into beasts both natural and fantastical. He’d seen Witches in action, knew Vampires with superhuman strength, and his own brother could talk to ghosts.
Whether she called herself a Drakein or a Wyvern, he knew she was like him. And whatever it was that Jennifer took from Daeja, he would get it back.
He would earn her trust and prove he was a good mate. The only problem with this plan was their handler was a notorious PITA.
PAIN IN THE ASS–yes, all caps.
She would’ve put anything worthwhile in the super safe she kept locked up in her office. They’d all seen it a time or two over the years, and that was both good and bad.
Good, because it existed. Bad, because it was impossible to break into. He’d tried once or twice over the years as a prank.
“Here,” whispered Jasper as he removed the top right drawer from her desk.
Behind it was a false back. Once removed, the top of a safe that would only open for a biometric scan was revealed.
Shit.
“How the fuck do we open it?” Jasper growled.
“Like this,” Heliodore grunted.
“Heat the hinges,” he instructed his brother, while calling his own powers to him.
It was difficult since breathing fire was more natural to a Wyvern, but he knew this would work. Thank fuck for science shows.
Once the metal glowed white with Jasper’s specialized laser-like flame shooting from his mouth, Heliodore took his turn. He opened his mouth, calling his beast’s powers to him.
When he loosed his own single laser-like beam of flame, it was colder than the North fucking Pole.
He felt his brother’s awe and shudder at the suddenly freezing temperatures, but Heliodore could not lose focus.
No fucking way. He could not afford to. This was for his mate. His icy breath cooled the heated metal in seconds. The result was a very breakable safe door.
“Dor, I just wanted to say, if the comm isn’t there, that doesn’t mean Daeja is a liar. She might just need help,” Jasper offered, but it was cold comfort.
Heliodore’s future teetered on what they would find inside the safe. Once they’d ripped the door off the hinges, he reached inside and pulled out a thin disc, just as she’d described.
Relief flowed through him, quickly followed by shame at the grief he’d caused his mate. She’d bared her secrets, trusting him with her truth. And he had fucked up.
Shit. Fuck. Damn.
“You know what this means,” Jasper said, eyebrows raised. “You are so fucked, bro. I suggest flowers, wine, chocolate, and anything else she likes.”
“French fries,” he grunted, “and hot honey.”
A discovery he’d made with his mate in the middle of the night. Of course, the honey had been drizzled over bits of skin and lapped off greedily until they were both sticky sweet messes.
The shower that followed had been better than what they’d done to get in there in the first place.
Fuck.
He really hoped he was going to get another chance to get dirty and clean again with his sweet rosebud.
“She was telling the truth. The whole time. I’m a fucking idiot,” he grumbled.
“Yep,” Jasper agreed.
Heliodore closed his eyes for a second before noises told them of the incoming patrol.
“Come on,” his brother said. “Let’s get this back to her so we can devise a plan.”
Minutes later, the four of them were seated in the back of the WPU’s black SUV. They’d decided on using the vehicle should anyone from the Division of Paranormal Creatures and Activity come upon them.
The silence was uncomfortable. It stretched and stretched until he couldn’t take it anymore.
“Daeja,” he tried, but she ignored him. “Daeja, come on. Talk to me.”
“What?” she hissed.
“Look, I am sorry I didn’t believe you, but you have to admit, it’s a difficult concept.”
“No more difficult than what I have been through, Heliodore Wessex,” she countered.
Shit.
Was it possible for him to feel any worse?
“I have lost everything. My entire planet was destroyed, and now my apakein is at the mercy of a madman. I trusted you!” she hissed.
Yep.
Apparently, it was possible for him to feel worse.
Fuck.
“Okay, you said you had one more turning to complete your mission. I assume you mean to rescue your grandfather—” Heliodore tried.
“So? What does it matter? None of you believed me. Just give me the comm,” she demanded.
“Not so fast,” Larimar said. “We need to find Conny and Jenn first.”
“Unless your brother and handler are on the ship, I—” she paused, sucking in a sharp breath.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
She shook her head, but he could see from the look in her eyes she’d had a thought. Judging from the way her heartbeat spiked, it wasn’t a good one.
“It matters. Please, rosebud, explain,” Dor said, aware that his brothers were listening.
“I told you Commander Viper sent me to find four stasis pods that had been sent here carrying the Flamebound Clan heirs. I believe you four are those younglings,” she started.
“What?”
“Shh, let her talk,” Dor growled at Larimar.
“He wanted me to destroy them. To destroy you. He expected the pods to remain in stasis, see? Your legends were already a threat—”
“You think we are princes?” Jasper asked, scratching his head.
“I know you are princes. You have the look of Queen Elianna. I will prove that on the ship. Look, none of you trusted me, but you have seen my beast, Dor. You know we are the same.”
“Okay, wait, how did this bad guy take over?”
“He claimed the position of Commander because he is the last male heir of the Viper Clan who won the war. But you, you can challenge him for leadership.”
“What the hell is she talking about?” Lari asked.
“Wait. Don’t you remember?” Jasper asked. “Daeja said we were princes when she was with Caro!”
“That’s right. Our eggs were actually stasis pods,” Heliodore explained without any hesitation.
“Listen up, bros, it’s time you accept the truth my mate is telling us. We’re all aliens, descended from the Chief of the Flamebound Clan,” Dor replied.
“What?” Lari asked, eyes wide.
“You believe me?” Daeja whispered.
“Don’t you see?” Heliodore said to Jasper and Larimar, afraid to look at her just yet. “It’s why that guy sent her to find us, but her single ship crashed. Jennifer must have known.”
“Affirmative. I told her all.”
“So, this Cass Viper. He a tough guy?” Jasper asked.
Three pairs of eyes turned towards Dor’s mate and he smiled, proud of her as she straightened her shoulders before answering them.
Brave, sweet, sexy mate.
