Daeja listened as Heliodore rose to her defense, but she refused to be taken in by his charm again. The reality hurt too much for that. Oh, what she would not give if he had only believed her at the first. But he hadn’t.
Where could they go from here?
She closed her eyes against the despair threatening to swallow her. Focusing on the task at hand instead.
“So, this Cass Viper. He a tough guy?” Jasper asked.
“Well, actually, he is a dickhead,” Daeja informed them, ignoring the bark of laughter from Dor.
“But he is a Wyvern?”
“A Drakein,” she corrected. “He has taken command and is an unjust tyrant. No one can challenge his rule, except maybe you.”
Daeja sucked in a deep breath, her magenta eyes darting to all three Wessex brothers.
“Us?” Jasper murmured.
“Which one of us?” Dor asked.
“Any of the four. It is your birthright to lead the Clan.”
“The fuck?” Larimar said.
“Okay, pause. You’re saying we are aliens?” Jasper repeated slowly and Dor growled at him.
“Yes. We are Drakein and we originated from a planet called Drakeinan.” Heliodore explained and tipped his head towards Daeja. “And she was right. This whole fucking time.”
“What the fuck are you talking about, bro?” growled Larimar.
“Shut up, and listen to my mate,” Dor hissed, and her emotions went reeling at his coming to her aid.
“Everything she has said from day one has been the truth. You know the DPCA and other government agencies don’t share intel. Well, who the fuck is in charge of aliens, Jas?”
“Not us,” Jasper murmured.
“That’s right. Not us. No one knows how we came to be. They said they found us in eggs, bro. Fucking eggs. Wrong. They were stasis pods. She is right. She has been telling us the truth the whole fucking time,” he snarled.
“Can you tell us more?” Jasper inquired.
“Many years ago, Drakeinan, the planet of your birth, was in the middle of a great war that devastated whole Clans and annihilated every living thing,” she trembled as she explained.
“Both Flamebound and Viper Clans have hated each other for ages. They would stop at nothing to wipe one another out. My apakein and I are the only survivors of the Flamebound Clan, except for you. Commander Viper is the last royal heir of his birth Clan. He took control, as was his right, but only because no eligible males could challenge him.”
“But we can,” Heliodore realized.
“Yes!” Daeja nodded, a spark of hope lighting her eyes.
“You four are the offspring of the last Chief of the Flamebound Clan. I was born of the Clan. I have studied the royal histories, and you,” she said and looked at Heliodore. “You have the crystalline gaze of your makein. There are many volumes aboard the ship. There is much there you can learn. I will show you once we have rescued the others,” she said.
Hope for the future sparked a flame in her heart before she turned away once more. She dared not trust herself not to jump on the male who owned her body, heart, and soul, but this was much too serious for inattention.
“We can’t be,” whispered Jasper, but Heliodore could see his brother had heard the truth of what she was saying.
“Have you seen others like you on this planet?” she asked, her impatience growing.
Heliodore had to admit, they were the only Wyverns of their kind. He looked at his brothers, noting the moment they believed, and pride washed over him. His Daeja was a wonder.
But was she his any longer?
Her sadness washed over him, and he reached for her, but his rosebud shied from his touch. That small, seemingly irrelevant motion sliced through him like a hot knife through butter.
It fucking hurt. More than anything he’d ever felt, it hurt. Jasper’s cell rang at that moment. His brother was always ready to answer should Caro need him.
Heliodore watched as his eyes flashed in shock and anger. His brother revved the engine and sped down the graveled road back to their home.
“What’s up, bro?” Larimar yelled.
Brows furrowed, Jasper turned to face Daeja before opening his mouth and roaring at his brothers, “Your mate was right. But can she tell me why there’s a UFO at our fucking house?”
“Don’t talk to her like that,” Heliodore snapped, snarling at his brother.
Daeja paled beneath the Wyvern’s angry stare. The scent of fear filled the SUV.
Hers.
And it made his beast angry as fuck.
“Faster. You must go faster,” was all she said.
Heliodore leaned over, taking her hand in his, refusing to let her pull away from him. Shit was about to go down.
“Daeja, I have a feeling we are walking into a shit show and before we do that I need you to hear me,” he growled, waiting for her petal pink gaze to find his.
“I love you.”
