“Santa!”
Candy swallowed down her nervousness and smiled up at the cheerfully corpulent chairman of Christmas himself. Larger than life in his exquisite red velvet suit with hand-stitched golden thread and pristine white fur trim, Kris Kringle, aka Santa Claus, looked down at Candy with a benevolent smile on his face.
His crystal blue gaze flicked to the strange male currently trying to push Candy behind his enormous body. Curious behavior. But not bad. Santa adopted an amused expression on his pink-cheeked face, as the man grew protective of the young Christmas Elf.
Interesting…
Of course, that expression soon changed from mild amusement to startled surprise when a very large, very sharp, curved sword—a khopesh, if you wanted to be exact—appeared directly in front of Santa’s cherubic nose. The blade was expertly held by the stranger who, after racking his brain, Santa was certain was, of course, Medjed, the warrior of Osiris.
“Well, this just got very interesting,” Santa stated with a jolly laugh.
“Silence, fiend!”
“OMG! Medjed, put that down!” Candy hissed angrily and grabbed Medjed’s unmoving wrist as Santa blinked and backed up slowly with his gloved hands raised high in surrender.
“You are he? The corpulent oppressor of normals young and old? The one who seeks to punish children with your lists and your erred judgement! I know of you, he who calls himself San Ta Claws.”
“Son, I think we have a misunderstanding here,” Santa said and swallowed audibly as Medjed pressed the point of his blade against his coat.
“I think not, monster.”
“Look, the name is Santa Claus. You can say I run things in the Magical Christmas Village. And just who are you?”
“I am the Warrior and Guard of the House of Osiris, the Sword of the Underworld. I am Medjed, and I am here on a mission. I will put an end to your nefarious practices, thereby freeing the children of the world from your cruel voyeuristic games,” growled Medjed.
“STOP!” shouted Candy.
“I would obey you, always, rohi, but I am sworn—”
“You listen to me, Medjed,” Candy said in her best no-nonsense voice.
“But I—”
“Not up for negotiating. Drop that sword or I swear on everything sparkly and tinselly that I will never speak to you again,” she threatened.
Candy narrowed her eyes and turned swiftly, placing herself between his sharpened khopesh and Santa. Medjed immediately put the weapon down. Narrowing his eyes, he snapped his fingers and disappeared the thing entirely.
“Candy, please,” he begged, but she was really mad now.
“Alright now, you two seem to have an issue,” Santa said and stepped between the arguing couple.
“Butt out, round one,” Medjed snapped.
“Easy with the jibes there, Medjed. Now, if you like, I think I can help. Mrs. Claus does say I have quite the knack for mediation. Now, Candy, and you too, son, why don’t we sit down and take this thing from the top over some hot cocoa and cookies?”
“But Santa, if you don’t leave soo—” Jolly began.
“Now, Jolly, I am Santa Claus, and I assure you, I have time for this,” Santa said.
With one large, white-gloved hand, he beckoned the two angry and confused lovers towards a table that had somehow just appeared. An insulated carafe of hot cocoa sat in the middle, along with a stack of environmentally friendly cups, along with bowls of marshmallows, whipped cream, and a three-tiered tray of cookies.
“Start at the beginning,” Santa said, as he poured steaming cocoa into Christmas themed cups and handed them out.
The other Elves formed a line and Jolly took over dispensing cocoa from the seemingly never-ending carafe. Candy took a fortifying sip before opening her mouth—being one of his Christmas Elves, she felt it prudent she should go first.
“Well, Santa, you see, it all started—”
And so, it really began…
