Annabelle's eyes bulged. "Impossible! Victor loves me! You've had a crush on him since we were kids. You're jealous he chose me, so you're trying to steal him—what else could this be but you seducing him?"
Elena couldn't be bothered to waste another breath.
So the booklet was just a pretext and picking a fight was the real goal. Elena shot her a frosty glance and turned to leave.
Annabelle grabbed her shoulder and shouted, "Don't you dare walk away!"
"Let go!" Elena snapped.
Annabelle shrieked and toppled into the pond beneath the rockery.
"Ah! Help! Somebody help!" she screamed.
She thrashed wildly in the water, calling for rescue.
From the bank, Elena watched her with an icy expression.
Annabelle shouted, "Help me! Please—pull me out—I don't want to die!"
Elena frowned, pressed her lips together, stepped to the edge, and extended a hand. "Grab on!"
She caught hold of Annabelle, but the girl felt as heavy as lead; Elena nearly got dragged in herself.
"Help... mmph..." Annabelle's body kept sinking.
Just then a shout rang out behind her. "Annie!"
Elena turned to see Victor Whitmore sprinting toward them, the three Bennett family members close on his heels.
Julian Bennett barked, "Elena Bennett, what are you doing?"
No one waited for an explanation. Victor shoved her aside and hauled Annabelle out with brute force.
"Annie! Annie, are you all right?" Victor asked, voice shaking.
Annabelle sobbed in Victor's arms, whispering, "It was Elena... Last night I spotted lipstick on your shirt and asked her about it, but she lost her temper, shoved me into the pond, and refused to let me climb out..."
"Heaven help me, Victor, I'm terrified... Are you going to leave me?"
Victor's face darkened; he looked at Elena. "Was that lipstick something you planted on purpose?"
Elena stared at him, stunned. "Victor Whitmore, how could—"
Smack! A sharp slap cracked through the air.
Before she could finish, a stinging palm struck her cheek.
Julian Bennett glared at her and roared, "How can you be so vile? Trying to steal your own sister's fiancé—if we hadn't arrived when we did, you'd have drowned Annie! You're vicious beyond belief!"
"Julian, I'm so scared... Does Elena want me dead?" Annabelle whimpered.
Her face was deathly pale, her pitiful appearance wrenching at everyone's heartstrings.
Victor cast Elena a heavy look. "I'm taking Annie home."
With that, he carried Annabelle away.
Julian clenched his teeth, then lashed out and kicked Elena hard, knocking her into the pond.
Pain and cold flooded her as her whole body plunged into the icy water.
The pond was only about five feet deep, yet she couldn't find her footing at all.
The three Bennett family members stood above, watching her flail without the slightest reaction.
Julian shouted down, "Stay there and think long and hard about what you've done!"
Having said that, they left together.
Elena Bennett couldn't swim. She swallowed several mouthfuls of water, her limbs drained almost at once, and even her cries for help grew faint.
Just then a waiter came over to clear the area and finally noticed Elena struggling in the water.
By the time they hauled her out, her whole body was so cold it had gone numb.
The waiter apologized and urged, "I'm sorry, miss—please go into the heated room and dry yourself."
"Thank you," Elena whispered.
Soaked through and with no idea how to get home, she hesitated for a long time before taking out her phone and calling Simon Whitmore.
