Adaline cried, "Elena! How could you become like this? Don't tell me it wasn't intentional—you just want revenge on your sister, don't you?"
Lawrence Bennett barked, "Elena Bennett, if you dare harbor any improper thoughts about Victor Whitmore, I'll break your legs. The Bennett family can feed you for life—go ahead and try me!"
Elena said nothing, letting their insults wash over her like rain.
When they finally tired themselves out, she smiled. "Finished? Good. I'm going back to Victor—we're having dinner later. Annabelle, if you're worried, feel free to tag along."
She shot her sister a deliberately provocative glance, then turned and sauntered off.
Annabelle's lungs felt ready to burst. Elena was doing this on purpose—starting her revenge with the one thing Annabelle valued most: Victor Whitmore.
Her complexion turned ashen. Her career lay in ruins, and months of effort hadn't restored it. She absolutely couldn't let Elena triumph again.
Julian hurled a few harsh threats at Elena's retreating back, then softened his tone for Annabelle. "Annie, let's go home. She won't dare do anything."
Annabelle shook her head. "Brother, I want to wait for Victor. I made a huge mess today—I have to explain."
"Will you be all right alone?"
"You guys go. I'll be fine."
"Okay. I'll swing by the office for a bit."
Adaline and Lawrence left with Julian, while Annabelle remained on the sofa, waiting.
Before long she spotted Elena exiting the suite and heading toward the restroom.
Annabelle hurried after her.
Inside, Elena was touching up her makeup at the mirror when Annabelle stormed in, yanked the lipstick from her hand, and flung it aside.
Annabelle snarled, "Elena Bennett! I'm warning you—stay away from Victor Whitmore!"
Elena frowned. "Annabelle, haven't I said it clearly enough? I'm not interested in him.
"Ever since I got out, he's the one chasing me, and I'm sick of it.
"Honestly, shouldn't you keep your own man in line? Or is he just not that into you, so he keeps looking elsewhere?"
Annabelle's eyes flew wide, humiliation turning her cheeks scarlet.
Elena's words pierced straight through her. Victor simply wasn't attracted to her—she had stripped naked for him that night, and he still hadn't wanted her.
Annabelle Bennett's face twisted into a mask of rage. "You vile witch! How dare you compete with me for anything that's mine!" she shouted.
She swung her hand upward, aiming a ferocious slap at Elena Bennett's cheek.
Elena had anticipated the blow; before Annabelle's palm could land, she jerked her head aside, let her body tilt, and tumbled lightly to the floor.
"Ah—don't hit me..." Elena whimpered, her voice quavering.
Annabelle's eyes flew wide as she stared at her own outstretched hand.
She hadn't even touched her!
Damn it—fooled again!
Annabelle whirled around just in time to see a swarm of reporters rushing through the doorway, surrounding her in a flash.
One reporter thrust a microphone forward. "Miss Annabelle Bennett, aren't you famous for a sweet, gentle image? Why are we seeing something so vicious today?"
Another asked, "Were you trying to hit your own sister?"
"Miss Bennett, can you comment on the indecent video that surfaced last time?"
Questions poured in from every direction, camera lenses shoved a breath away from her face.
Her complexion turned ghost-white, and she stumbled backward.
"Stay away... ah! Don't ask me—stay back!" Annabelle screamed.
Elena picked herself up, one hand covering her cheek, and spoke gently to the reporters. "Please, don't be so hard on her. My little sister's already traumatized by that indecent video."
