With the Greenriver Project finally humming along, Elena Bennett was no longer drowning in work. Every night after she clocked out, she slipped online to accept a few illustration commissions.
Before her months at the prison, she had already carved out a modest online reputation, yet the past year of radio silence had frozen her platform.
Her followers, however, were fiercely loyal; the moment she posted a new piece, her name surged back through the art circles.
Most evenings she headed straight to her apartment and lost herself in paint. Riverton was hosting an exhibition in a week, and she wanted to submit several canvases for exposure—while also maintaining a healthy distance from Simon Whitmore.
Now that the project was nearing its end, Simon had hardly spoken to her since she paid him back; even their work exchanges were confined to the conference room.
She figured their lives would soon drift apart for good.
After registering for the show, she sorted through her portfolio. One canvas dated back to her years in the Bennett household—a family portrait. She stared at it for a long time, a quiet smile tugging at her lips.
She had painted it one New Year's Eve, the sunset washing a snow-blanketed yard in soft gold.
The figures were shown only from behind, yet anyone could recognize Julian, Adaline, Lawrence, and Elena herself.
It was her most cherished work; even after she left the Bennett estate, she kept it close.
After much thought, she decided to exhibit it.
Only on opening day did Elena learn that Annabelle Bennett had also entered the show.
Of course she had—whatever Elena owned, Annie had to own; whatever Elena could do, Annie had to master.
Upon Annie's return, their parents had hired elite art instructors, enrolled her in piano and dance, and finally steered her into the glittering entertainment world.
Elena spotted her across the gallery—Annie surrounded by their parents and Julian, who all cheered her on. Adaline had even summoned several friends to boost her youngest's morale.
From afar, the family looked picture-perfect.
Just then Adaline's gaze swung toward Elena.
Adaline's smile stiffened before she walked over and asked, "Elena, what brings you here?"
"I've studied art for over ten years. Am I not allowed to show my work here?"
"I didn't mean it like that," Adaline murmured. "You're far more talented than Annie—if you're here, how can she possibly shine?"
"So what you're saying is that I'm blocking her light?"
"I..." Adaline faltered, unable to voice the request that Elena withdraw.
Elena's lips curved into an icy smile, and she turned away.
Several visitors were long-time fans of her work, and a lively crowd soon gathered around her display.
One woman halted before the family portrait and exclaimed, "Wow, this is stunning! Ms. Bennett, what inspired it?"
"This piece—"
"Good heavens, Elena! How could you plagiarize my painting?" Annie's shrill voice sliced through the hall.
Her accusation reverberated around the gallery.
Annie pointed at the portrait, biting her lip. "That painting is obviously stolen from mine. How dare you display it?"
"Annie, I painted this five years ago. You and I both know who's copying whom."
Annie thrust her own canvas forward. "Can you still claim you didn't rip me off?"
