"Elena!" Panic flashed across Julian's eyes as he dove forward and caught her.
Julian shouted, "Elena! What's wrong? Somebody get her to the hospital—now!"
In the Hospital.
Julian stood by the bedside, staring at her death-pale face. Memories of her hurling herself in front of that painting to shield it, the moment she destroyed it with her own hands, and—most unbearable of all—his own violence crashed over him in waves of guilt and pain.
'She must be aching to turn back time just as desperately as I am,' Julian realized, the thought cutting even deeper.
Thankfully, none of her internal organs were harmed this time; the doctors said she'd suffered only surface wounds and a scattering of bruises.
Elena slowly opened her eyes.
The first thing she saw was the three Bennett faces hovering over her.
Adaline asked anxiously, "Elena, you're awake?"
Elena closed her eyes again.
Adaline sighed. "Oh, Elena, I don't know how things ended up like this. I never wanted you hurt... but I don't want Annie hurt either. When will you two stop fighting? I just want us to go back to the happy days we used to have."
Elena opened her eyes again.
Staring blankly at the ceiling, she murmured, "You don't have to put yourself in that position."
"The project is nearly finished. Give me the household registration booklet so I can transfer my name out. Once I leave, I'll no longer be a Bennett, and you won't have to choose between your daughters."
Adaline gaped at her. "Elena..."
"You promised back then that once the project was over you'd let me move my registration."
Julian studied her. "So you've really decided? Once the booklet's transferred, you'll no longer be my sister."
Elena's mouth curved into a mocking smile.
Was being his sister supposed to be some priceless gift?
"I'm not cut out to be part of the Bennett family," she said tiredly. "Let me go."
Julian kept his eyes on her for a long moment.
Adaline clapped a trembling hand over her mouth. "Elena..."
Their only remaining link was that booklet; once it was gone, Elena Bennett would cease to exist for the family.
At length Julian nodded. "All right. I'll go get it."
"Sis!" Annabelle Bennett burst in just then, Victor Whitmore right behind her.
"Sis, the moment I heard you'd been hospitalized I rushed straight over. Are you okay?" Annabelle cried.
Elena fixed her with a frosty stare.
"Sis, are you mad at me? That painting really was my original work. I had no idea you'd drawn something similar—maybe it's just a coincidence."
Elena lifted her lip in scorn. "What a pity. If you'd kept up the act instead of digging your own grave, maybe you could've snagged a Best Actress trophy and brought glory to the Bennetts."
Victor's brows knit. "Elena Bennett, knock off the sarcasm."
Biting her lip, Annabelle put on an innocent face. "Sis, I don't know what you're talking about—I never copied you."
"Enough, Annie. Drop it. She's about to stop being your sister anyway," Julian said.
Annabelle blinked in surprise. "What do you mean?"
"She's transferring her registration. From now on she won't belong to the Bennett family," he replied.
Annabelle pressed her lips together and glanced at Elena.
"This can't be right." She furrowed her brows. "Sis has suffered enough. We can't heartlessly throw her out—people will talk."
"She can't paint anymore. How's she supposed to support herself after she leaves? I can't watch her struggle like that. I want to stay and look after her. Brother, don't let her walk away from us!"
Annabelle's eyes flashed with malice as she shot Elena a vicious glare.
Elena Bennett thinks she can break free of us and escape her misery? Hmph—over my dead body!' Annabelle thought.
