Just as Lawrence slumped in dejection, President Walter, glasses gleaming, approached him.
"President Bennett, long time no see," Walter greeted.
"Ah, President Walter—long time, long time," Lawrence replied.
Walter grinned. "I heard you're looking for investors. What's the project?"
Lawrence's eyes lit up. He ushered Walter to a nearby sofa and explained the details with earnest enthusiasm.
Halfway through, Walter smiled and said, "Everyone knows the Bennett Corporation's situation. Let me be blunt—I'm willing to invest, but..."
President Walter leaned back and drawled, "But what? I've heard President Bennett's daughter is a real beauty, a bona fide star. Would you be willing to let that lovely girl have dinner with me?"
Mr. and Adaline's expressions darkened at once; Lawrence Bennett's face fell as he snapped, "Keep dreaming!"
President Walter sprawled in his chair with shameless nonchalance.
"Dreaming? Please—I'm not asking for the moon. Your little starlet is yesterday's news, and hiring an out-of-work celebrity to pour drinks is merely a question of cash. If you're too stingy, I won't twist your arm."
Adaline hurried after him, pleading, "President Walter, please, don't go. We can discuss this."
"To be frank, my daughter has suffered enough. She's my very life. For that poor child's sake, could you consider another condition?"
They both knew "pouring drinks" was only a polite fiction; President Walter was a lecher. If they sent Annabelle, dinner and wine would be the least of it—and they would never let that man destroy their daughter.
He stroked his chin in mock contemplation. "If I remember right, you've got two daughters. The other one isn't a star, but she'll do."
Adaline's brows pinched together.
"How sentimental," Walter scoffed. "If you won't sacrifice a kid, you'll never catch the wolf. Well, I won't intrude further."
With that, he pushed back his chair and strode toward the exit.
At that moment Adaline spotted a familiar silhouette—Elena Bennett—sitting not far away.
The girl, dressed in gauzy white, quietly nibbled fruit, her posture as pure and elegant as a swan.
Adaline pressed her lips together and made her decision. "Fine—I agree. President Walter, wait in the upstairs guest room. I'll bring her in a moment."
President Walter lifted his brow. "That's the spirit. Here's the key."
Adaline accepted the card and walked straight toward Elena.
Adaline called softly, "Ellie."
Once, that gentle, motherly tone had been Elena's favorite sound; today it sent ice through her veins.
Elena offered a mild smile. "Adaline—what a coincidence. You're here, too."
The single address—"Adaline"—made the older woman's heart give a painful jolt.
She faltered. "You—"
Elena cut in, eyes flashing with impatience. "Say what you came to say. I'm tired of circling the issue."
A boulder seemed to press against Adaline's chest.
Suppressing the weight, she said, "Help me with one last favor, and I'll hand over the household-register booklet."
Elena lifted her gaze to her.
She raised a trembling hand and swore, "I promise—complete this, and I'll give you the booklet immediately. After that, the Bennett family will never trouble you again!"
Adaline's voice shook; tears welled and spilled down her cheeks. Watching her sob, Elena silently clenched her fists.
"Fine," Elena said coolly. "What is it?"
