Annie hurried forward to tug on Julian's sleeve. "Brother, please stop. This is all my fault. It's just that Elena showed up dressed like this, and of course people were bound to suspect her."
She turned to Elena, her voice soft yet penetrative. "Elena, I know you've been wronged, but did you dress like this because you don't want Victor and me to get engaged? If you're unhappy, just tell me—I'll step aside and give Victor back to you."
With that, Annie slipped her arm through Victor's, hating the sight of him standing beside Elena and despising even more that he had stepped forward to defend her.
Adaline immediately chimed in, her tone scolding. "Elena, you were the one who agreed to break off the engagement in the first place. Now your sister is about to be engaged to Victor—why are you pulling this stunt again?"
A chill spread through Elena's chest.
'Back at the hospital they scolded me for assuming the worst of Annie, yet now that Annie is assuming the worst of me, they don't say a single word for my sake. Instead they pile on, accusing me of trying to steal my own sister's fiancé,' she thought.
After admonishing her, Adaline forced a bright smile at Victor. "Victor, you and Annie are the stars today. Come inside—our guests are waiting, and we don't want to give them a show out here."
Julian gave a derisive snort. "Things are already this messy; you're worried about putting on a show? Just look at what she's wearing!"
Still glaring at Elena as though she had mortally offended him, Julian barked, "Did you have to dress like that? Don't you own any other clothes?"
Expressionless, she answered, "I'd like to know that myself. Mom, where are all my clothes? Burned? Thrown away?"
Adaline frowned. "No one threw out your clothes. The servants must have packed them somewhere. Besides, didn't Annie give you a few dresses? Why insist on wearing this one?"
Irritation flickered plainly in Adaline's eyes.
Elena lifted a brow. "Do you really think Annie and I wear the same size?"
Adaline choked on her words. "...Even so, it's better than what you have on now. Elena, you can't blame your brother for being angry—you're being downright disobedient."
Julian snorted. "Disobedient? She's doing it on purpose to humiliate Annie! We arranged an evening gown for her yesterday, yet she insists on wearing this rag that can't even see the light of day!"
Victor, too, had noticed the gown he prepared yesterday. She had brought it but never put it on—what was she playing at?
Julian snapped, "Why are you still standing there? Go upstairs and change!"
Elena didn't budge. "That gown doesn't fit."
"How could it not fit? You picked it yourself!" Julian growled. "Are you determined to ruin everyone's mood?"
She remained motionless. At that moment, Victor stooped to pick up the gown, strode over, and said in a tone that brooked no refusal, "Go change."
She looked up at him. "I told you—it isn't suitable."
With a sudden burst of temper, Julian lunged forward and clamped her wrist in a vicious grip. "Elena Bennett! You're deliberately causing trouble! As long as I'm here, you will not ruin Annie's engagement banquet. Get upstairs and change, now!"
His fingers dug in hard enough to crush bone; pain drained the color from her face. "Julian Bennett, I'm refusing to change precisely because I don't want to spoil her engagement."
