Every stubborn, ugly scar felt like a fist squeezing Julian's heart.
She was the sister he had cherished for twenty years; how could anyone have tortured her until no inch of skin was left unmarred?
Clutching her chest, Adaline cried, "Elena, what have you been through? Why are you covered in wounds?"
She thought, 'Swill for food, savage beatings—That place was supposed to be where rich folks sent their kids to straighten them out. Since when did it turn into this kind of nightmare?'
Lawrence Bennett's brows drew tight as he took in her injuries. "Elena, who did this to you?"
Elena lifted her gaze. "Dad, Mom, are those tears from pain, from guilt, or from relief that the one who suffered wasn't your other daughter?"
"Dad, you ask who hurt me. Don't you remember who shoved me out there in the first place? Don't you know the real source of all this misery?"
"Elena... please stop!" Adaline sobbed, a note of panic slipping into her voice.
So—were they afraid she might lay the truth bare in front of all these people?
The guests murmured among themselves, trading hushed conjectures.
Hearing Elena Bennett's remark, someone wondered if the wounds covering her body were connected to the Bennett family.
"She's the Bennett family's Eldest Miss. Even if she isn't their flesh and blood, they raised her for twenty years—shouldn't that count for something? How could they let her be beaten like this?"
"I never thought the Bennetts could be so heartless. The moment their biological daughter came home, they started torturing the adopted one. Poor Elena—she even lost her fiancé."
Julian Bennett frowned at the murmurs and raised his voice. "Everyone, please stop guessing! Elena has been the princess our entire family holds in the palm of its hand. We treasure her—why would we ever harm her?"
Julian bit down on his molars. "I, Julian Bennett, swear I will make whoever hurt my sister pay for it!"
"Ellie, tell your brother who hit you. I'll make sure you get justice," Julian urged.
A chill spread through Elena's heart; she tugged at the corner of her lips and managed a desolate smile.
She thought, 'They were the ones who told the guards to go after me. And now, right in front of all these people, just to save face for the Bennetts, they had the nerve to ask who did this to me? What a family of Oscar-worthy actors!'
"Ellie, say something! Don't be afraid—your brother will always stand behind you!" Julian pressed.
Elena found the whole thing absurd and actually let out a laugh.
She lifted her eyes to him and asked coldly, "Who hurt me—you truly don't know?"
Julian's brows pulled tight. "What do you mean by that?"
Annabelle Bennett stepped forward wearing a look of innocent concern. "Elena, do you really think we did all this? You're my sister—the daughter Mom and Dad have cherished for so many years. They love you more than they love me. If we'd known you would be treated like this inside, we'd rather have died than send you there."
Julian added sharply, "Elena, I know you've been wronged, but you shouldn't fling mud at the Bennett family."
What a performance—turning right into wrong and wrong into right!
They knew perfectly well who had stolen the jewelry back then.
Elena couldn't hold back another laugh, yet while she laughed, tears slipped down her cheeks; the sound was like a handful of thorns yanking at everyone's nerves.
