With that, Elena strode from the room and headed straight for Victor. From the doorway Annabelle watched her sister walk right up to him. Victor crushed out his cigarette and lowered his eyes to Elena's hand.
Annabelle nearly lost her mind. She bit down hard on her lip—she could not let Elena take Victor. She tore downstairs and flung herself into her mother's arms, sobbing, "Mom... Elena—she... she—"
Adaline cupped her daughter's face, distressed. "What is it, Annie? What did your sister do?"
Annie hiccupped through her tears. "She still can't let Victor go. I saw her walk up to him. Mom, does she hate me? First she broke off the engagement to humiliate me in front of the whole city, and now she wants to snatch Victor back."
Adaline's eyes widened. "Impossible! You and Victor are already engaged. He's your fiancé—she can't take him."
"But Elena already—" Annie pointed toward the terrace.
Adaline's expression darkened. Julian Bennett, standing beside her, growled, "She dares? Come on—your brother will get justice for you."
Julian strode over, shoved the glass door wide, yanked Elena away from Victor, and slapped her hard. "Elena Bennett, have you no shame!"
Elena seemed to have expected the blow. She tilted her head; the slap skimmed her earlobe, which burned instantly.
Victor's brow knotted. "Julian Bennett, what are you doing?"
Julian jabbed a finger at Elena. "What am I doing? Disciplining my own sister—none of your business. You faked that broken engagement just to embarrass Annie, and now you're shamelessly seducing Victor to steal him back. Where did you learn such vile tricks?"
Elena pressed her lips together and met his eyes coldly. "Brother, I truly don't understand what you're talking about."
Adaline looked at her in disappointment. "Elena, we caught you red-handed, and you're still arguing?"
"Unrepentant! Kneel!" Julian barked.
Victor pulled Elena behind him. "Julian Bennett, are you out of your mind?"
Julian sneered. "Protecting her, are you? Don't forget—Annie is your fiancée. You and Elena are finished."
Annie wept pitifully. "Victor, do you want to be with my sister now?"
"Victor Whitmore, I'm warning you—hurt Annie and I will make you pay!" Julian threatened.
"You—" Victor clenched his jaw, but Elena caught his arm.
Elena stepped forward. "Brother is right—this is my fault. I don't even know what I did wrong, but if Annie is hurt, it must be my doing." She bent her knees and dropped to the floor.
The instant her knees struck, her body folded and trembled, as though she were enduring knife-sharp pain.
Victor glanced down, hurried to pull her up—and froze.
Sweat dotted Elena's forehead.
"Elena Bennett, what's wrong?" Victor asked.
She shook her head weakly. "N-nothing... just hurts a little..."
Victor frowned. "Where does it hurt?"
