At a restaurant, Grace slid into a window booth and, wearing a sycophantic smile, told the woman behind dark sunglasses, "Miss Bennett, I'm sorry to keep you waiting. That Elena Bennett blocked me outside the restroom after work."
Annabelle Bennett smiled faintly and removed her sunglasses. "It's fine."
"I left her to stew all day the moment she showed up—just as you instructed. Consider it a warning shot."
"Well done," Annabelle said, stirring her coffee. "Remember—she has to be placed on the project team, but she is not to touch any substantive work. If necessary, give her some extra...attention. You understand?"
"Of course, Miss Bennett. Tomorrow she'll learn that getting a job at Bennett Corporation isn't that easy."
Annabelle nodded with satisfaction, her gaze darkening as she studied her coffee cup.
"A counterfeit like her has no right to meddle in the Bennetts' business. Everything that belongs to the family is mine."
Grace echoed fawningly, "Exactly. She's still living off the Bennetts—that alone is generous. If she had any shame, she'd leave on her own."
Annabelle's lips curved; she enjoyed every word.
The next morning Elena rose early and reached the office twenty minutes ahead of schedule.
Grace timed her own arrival to the minute. Seeing Elena, a derisive smile flickered in her eyes.
"Here bright and early, I see. Miss Bennett—oh, that's right, you're not 'Miss' anymore. I'll just call you Elena."
"Elena Bennett, your assignment today is to visit the construction site and get familiar with the project schedule and progress. Any problem with that?"
"No problem," Elena replied.
"Good. I'll take you over now," Grace said with a toothy grin.
Elena caught the malice hidden in that smile, but for the moment she could only follow orders.
Grace escorted her to the site office and handed her off to the project manager.
"Manager Henry, this is Elena Bennett, newly assigned to the project. Show her the progress and walk her through the details."
Henry—a portly middle-aged man—gave her a once-over, eyes crinkling in a genial nod. "Sure."
Grace smiled. "She's all yours. I'll be on my way."
Henry led her around the site for a quick overview, offered a few perfunctory explanations, and then took her to the main work area and told her to haul bricks.
Elena turned to him. "Manager Henry, that isn't part of my job description."
He let out a cold laugh. "Think it over. You're new, right? Whether you stay or go—one word from me settles it."
Elena clenched her palms. Even if she intended to leave Bennett Corporation, she refused to depart branded as someone fired for laziness.
If she got fired after only a few days on the job, Elena Bennett knew she would never again have the slightest chance to enter Bennett Corporation.
Although she understood perfectly well that Lawrence Bennett was using her, she intended to use this post as well, gathering whatever resources she could.
Confident she would not dare resist, Manager Henry said his piece and strode off.
Elena was assigned grunt work—hauling rebar and concrete blocks. In her tailored coat and neat ponytail she looked like a lily in a junkyard, immediately drawing every laborer's eye.
