Someone reported, "Mr. Bennett couldn't dig up a single thing—the surveillance files he asked for have vanished, no one knows who erased them."
Elena Bennett let out a long, shaky breath of relief.
Clearly Simon Whitmore had anticipated they would check the cameras and had wiped the evidence beforehand.
She walked out of the Whitmore estate, flagged down a cab, and hurried back to Bennett Corporation.
Meanwhile,
Julian Bennett's sedan screeched to a halt outside the corporate tower; he jumped out, slammed the door so hard it rattled, and stormed upstairs, heading straight for the project department.
"Elena Bennett, get out here!" he bellowed.
Director Grace rushed over and said, "President Bennett, you're looking for Elena? She showed up a little while ago and then disappeared—probably slipped out to have some fun!"
Julian narrowed his eyes. "She left the building?"
Grace nodded quickly. "Exactly! She is the Bennett heiress, after all. With that attitude toward work I really can't say much, President..."
"Did she tell anyone where she was going?" Julian cut in.
"Uh... I have no idea. Maybe she went shopping?" Grace ventured.
Julian's fist tightened until his knuckles cracked. "Hmph. She's too busy destroying evidence to waste time shopping."
Grace blinked in confusion. "Evidence? What evidence? President Bennett—hey, where are you going?"
Julian had already turned on his heel and left.
Grace narrowed her eyes; clearly Elena was in for it this time.
She'd heard first thing this morning that Elena had been rescued last night by Simon Whitmore, and that Supervisor Calvin Zane was threatening to settle the score with her.
With nowhere to vent her own anger, and uncertain whether Elena really had Simon's protection, Grace dared not act herself—she would have to find another way to get rid of the girl.
Julian waited for Elena in the ground-floor lobby.
His face was as dark as millennium-old ice, a violent aura rolling off him.
Just then a taxi pulled up to the curb and Elena stepped out.
Julian shot to his feet and strode outside.
Elena had taken only two steps when she spotted him.
She stopped, still trying to process what was happening, when his fist came flying and smashed into her skull.
Her head rang like a gong and she collapsed to the pavement.
Before she could speak, Julian drove his foot hard into her abdomen.
Her features twisted with agony; clutching her stomach, she glared at him, cold as frost.
"What right do you have to hit me!" Her voice sliced through the air like mid-winter wind.
Julian seized her frail body and hauled her up. "No right? You're my sister—of course I have the right to teach you a lesson! After what you did to Annie, you think I shouldn't beat you?"
He hurled her toward a nearby flowerbed; her spine slammed against the stone edge, and every bone in her body shook with pain.
But Julian wasn't finished. He stepped forward and kicked her belly again and again, forcing her back against the border.
"You really thought deleting the footage would keep me from knowing it was you? I spoiled you for twenty years, Elena, and you turned into a venomous viper!"
A stabbing pain burst in her chest, and blood spewed from her lips onto the snow.
Only then did Julian stop, shocked by the glaring crimson on the white ground.
Elena slowly lifted her head; in the biting wind her indifferent gaze shot into him like silent needles.
"I didn't delete the footage."
Her calm defense only stoked Julian's fury.
