His eyes bulged and he slapped her across the face.
"Elena Bennett! You're still lying? Answer me—did you go to Cloudsea Resort today?"
Elena clenched her fists. "Yes, I went to the estate, but not until after you'd already been there."
Julian let out a harsh laugh. "Do you think that lie sounds convincing, huh?"
"I'll beat you to death, you shameless wretch!"
He unleashed another storm of punches and kicks; Elena could only curl up like a shrimp, utterly defenseless.
She lay motionless, like a corpse, yet the despair and heartbreak in her eyes seemed ready to swallow the world.
A crowd had gathered at a distance. Someone, unable to watch any longer yet afraid to anger Julian, ventured, "President Bennett, isn't that your sister? What did she do to deserve such a beating?"
Julian turned to them, pointing at Elena's limp body. "That woman isn't worthy of being my sister! The Bennett family raised her for twenty years—when we learned she wasn't our biological child we still treated her the same."
"And how did she repay us? She ruined the reputation of the daughter my parents finally found, and time after time tried to take her life! With that kind of cruelty, tell me she doesn't deserve a beating!"
Listening to his righteous tirade, Elena suddenly laughed—every laugh sent fresh waves of pain tearing through her body.
The onlookers fell silent; a few even echoed him, "President Bennett is right—anyone who harms their own family deserves a harsh lesson!"
Julian Bennett stared at Elena Bennett sprawled in the snow.
Fresh blood clung to the corner of her lips and trickled along her cheek, dying the white ground red—yet she was smiling. The image jabbed his eyes like a needle, ferocious and impossible to ignore.
Elena suddenly burst into laughter. Propping herself up with the last of her strength, she shouted, "When someone wants to condemn you, they'll never lack an excuse! Ha-ha-ha..."
Julian's gaze shuddered, as though struck.
Elena's laughter broke off; she pitched forward and hit the snow, passing out cold.
Julian clenched his fists, dropped to a crouch, and called her name. "Elena! Elena Bennett!"
Only then, seeing the blood spattered on the snow and the torn skin on the back of her hand, did he realize how vicious his own blow had been.
Panicked, he scooped her into his arms and raced for the hospital.
Operating Room
Outside the doors, Julian stared at his hands, a heavy weight pressing on his chest.
Just then the doors swung open and a doctor hurried out. "Are you a relative of Elena Bennett?"
"I'm her brother," Julian replied.
"How did she receive these injuries?"
Julian hesitated, pressed his lips together, and admitted, "I hit her."
The doctor, midway through jotting notes, froze and looked up in shock. "She had surgery for gastric bleeding not long ago—you knew that, didn't you?"
Julian nodded.
The doctor drew a sharp breath, incredulous. "You knew and still beat her like this! Her incision hasn't even healed. Because of your blows she's bleeding internally again—do you understand?"
Julian kept his mouth shut, not a flicker of remorse on his face.
The doctor shook his head. "She's chronically malnourished; her body is already fragile. Instead of caring for her, you people hit her hard enough to risk her stomach entirely. One hour later and we might not have saved it at all!"
