Julian ground his teeth; the doctor's rebuke grated on him.
He still believed there was nothing wrong with disciplining his own sister.
He said coldly, "What right does a doctor have to meddle in my family's business? She's my sister—I can teach her a lesson."
"She committed an unforgivable mistake, so a beating was deserved. Your job is to keep her alive. I hit her—fine. If I crippled her, I can afford the bill."
Left speechless, the doctor handed him the consent form to sign, then turned back into the operating room.
Adaline and Lawrence Bennett arrived soon after.
Two hours later, Elena was wheeled out, still unconscious.
Removing his mask, the doctor addressed them without expression. "She hasn't woken up and needs absolute rest. If you can't be quiet, leave her alone in the room."
With that, he and a nurse personally pushed the bed into the ward.
The Bennett family trailed behind.
After learning Elena had suffered another gastric bleed because of the beating, Adaline covered her mouth in shock.
She rounded on her son. "Julian, couldn't you control your strength?"
"She brought this on herself! She posted Annie's video last night and went to the estate this morning to erase the surveillance footage. Didn't she deserve punishment?"
"But there's a limit. How could you beat her straight into surgery?"
Julian's jaw tightened as he stared at Elena's bloodless face. "She had it coming. Let's see if she dares act out again."
Adaline said nothing more.
Elena woke to a chorus of shrill voices she loathed, forcing her to open her eyes.
Adaline leaned over her, voice gentle. "Elena, you're awake. Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere—does anything hurt?"
Memory flooded back, and Elena's fists curled slowly.
Her gaze swept the room; Julian was nowhere in sight.
She asked coldly, "Where's Julian Bennett?"
"Your brother's outside smoking. Do you want him?"
Elena closed her eyes for a beat. "Tell him to come in."
Adaline gave her a complicated look. "All right, I'll fetch him."
Julian stepped back into the ward and halted by her bed. "You've ruined Annie's reputation; her life is over. I punished you for your own good—can't let you keep wreaking havoc."
Elena's face remained blank. "Whether she can go on living has nothing to do with me. But you beat me into this state. I'll have the doctor issue a disability certificate, and then I'm taking you to court."
She glared at him; her eyes blazed like torches, so full of hatred it felt as though they might set the room aflame.
No sooner had she spoken than all three of them stared at her in shock, eyes round as saucers.
Adaline gasped, "Elena, what did you just say? You want to sue your brother? Sue him for hitting you?"
Elena replied, "You heard me right. If you strike someone, you pay the price—this is a nation of laws. And if you believe I harmed Annabelle, you're welcome to sue me as well. I'll be waiting."
Julian narrowed his eyes and snarled, "Elena Bennett, you heartless wretch! Twenty years of my care were utterly wasted on you!"
