Elena laughed. "Care? Look at all these injuries—every bruise and fracture is your gift to me. How dare you spout such shameless nonsense?"
Julian shot back, "You brought this on yourself!"
Adaline tugged Julian a step backward; she could see Elena was absolutely determined to press charges.
They absolutely could not let their son be hauled into court.
Adaline said, "Julian, be quiet! Elena, your brother was wrong to hit you, but he acted out of crushing disappointment. In his heart you were always a sweet, innocent girl. After what you did, his anger was only natural."
Elena retorted, "I've said it a thousand times—I didn't post that video. Do you not understand plain English?"
Adaline hesitated, then murmured, "I...all right, how about this? I'll have Julian apologize to you, okay?"
Elena's lip curled in scorn; beaten so badly she landed in the operating room, and they thought one apology would wipe it all away.
Elena declared, "I don't accept an apology. I'm suing him, and the law will give me justice."
At her words, Adaline's face darkened like an oncoming storm.
Lawrence Bennett said flatly, "He's your brother, and I will not allow you to sue him."
Elena met his gaze, icy and unflinching. "But you allowed it when he beat me, didn't you?"
Adaline's voice dropped. "Elena, think carefully. If you sue your brother and he has to stand trial, do you realize how badly his reputation will suffer?"
Elena gave a bitter chuckle. "So you do understand assault is wrong. Who's going to make amends for what I've suffered?"
Adaline protested, "Why must you be so obstinate? Your brother was only joking. What siblings don't roughhouse? If you insist on being this willful, what can we possibly do?"
Elena shouted, "He beat me until I hemorrhaged, and you call that a joke? If it's so funny, why not let him give Annabelle a taste of it too?"
"Enough!" Lawrence barked.
Lawrence warned, "Elena Bennett, file that suit and I can lock you up again. You refuse to repent—fine, you'll get another round of re-education!"
Ice settled over her heart. Elena laughed through the tears and asked, "And who exactly are you to me? What right do you have to treat me like this?"
"I'm your father!" Lawrence thundered.
Elena said calmly, "Mr. and Adaline, I can't afford parents like you. From today on I'm no longer your daughter. Hand me the household booklet—I'll transfer my record. From now on I have nothing to do with the Bennett family."
Lawrence's brows knitted. "You want to sever ties with us?!"
Julian sneered, "Elena Bennett, you cold-blooded ingrate. The Bennetts raised you for twenty years and you dare talk about cutting us off?"
Lawrence's voice hardened. "Fine. Since you insist on cutting all ties, let's settle the accounts for these twenty years. You ate our food, slept under our roof, spent our money.
"We turned you into a society debutante, paid for your schooling and lessons. The Bennetts have poured at least about a million into you. If you can hand over that million, we will act as though we never had a daughter."
Elena answered evenly, "I'll repay every cent, but you must first let me move my registration."
"Impossible!" Lawrence snapped.
